Pick up almost any high-street hair serum and the first ingredients are silicones — dimethicone and its cousins. They feel silky for an hour because they wrap each strand in a waterproof film. But that film is a one-way mirror: it blocks humidity out, yet it also blocks nourishment from getting in, and it blocks moisture from escaping evenly. Over time the coated fiber becomes drier underneath while looking shinier on top — until clarifying day arrives and the true state of the hair is revealed.
Cold-pressed botanical oils behave in the opposite way. Pressing argan kernels, jojoba seeds or marula fruit without heat preserves their full spectrum of fatty acids, sterols and vitamin E. Weight is a formulation choice, not an oil problem
Oils have a reputation for heaviness, but heaviness usually comes from dose, not from the oil itself. Transition gradually. Use a clarifying wash once to remove old silicone buildup, then replace your serum with a botanical oil for two weeks before judging. Most people report a brief adjustment — hair feels different, less coated — followed by texture that keeps improving. That improvement curve is the signature of genuine nourishment: it compounds, where coating only repeats.
